Illinois's trusted garage door team
Steady, premium garage door care for Chicagoland homes
How Lighthouse Garage Doors came to be
Lighthouse Garage Doors was founded in 2011 by Peter Kowalski on the Northwest Side of Chicago. Peter grew up helping his father, a finish carpenter, on jobs across Jefferson Park and Portage Park, and spent his twenties installing garage doors for a suburban dealer. He started Lighthouse because he wanted to do the work at a higher standard than the volume business allowed: fewer jobs a day, better materials, and a technician who could explain the door as well as install it. The name came from the harbor light he passed every morning on Lake Shore Drive.
Chicago-area doors face two problems most of the country never sees. The first is the winter: lake wind, deep cold, and alley salt that attack springs, seals, and bottom rails from December through March. The second is the housing itself: detached alley garages with tight setbacks and no power, brick two-flats with low headroom, and suburban homes in Naperville and Schaumburg where the garage door is the largest visual element on the front of the house. We specify insulated, cold-rated hardware for the first and walk through design samples at the consultation for the second.
The company now has locations in Chicago, Naperville, Joliet, Aurora, Elgin, Waukegan, Schaumburg, Kankakee, DeKalb, and Rockford, staffed by technicians who trained in-house before running their own appointments. Every quote is written, every appointment time is honored or called ahead, and every installation carries our workmanship warranty. Peter still reviews the design consultations personally and still believes the best compliment a garage door can get is that nobody notices it, because it simply works, quietly, every single day.
A lighthouse does one thing and does it every night without fail. That is the standard we hold ourselves to on every door. — Peter, founder
